EPS and XPS are made from styrene, a liquid used in thousands of everyday products and, although derived from by-products of the oil and gas industry, it is also found naturally in many common foods such as strawberries, coffee and beans. The production process uses no CFCs or HCFCs and requires far less energy than most other material manufacturing processes. EPS and XPS are non-toxic, inert and will not degrade to pollute the environment. EPS in construction applications has Zero Ozone Depletion potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and has been given the BRE Green Guide’s highest possible A+ Rating.
Our products insulate and protect – reducing environmental and cutting CO2 emissions by up to 50%. The carbon impacts used to produce EPS are estimated to have been saved after only six months in use as a building insulation material. In the food industry, EPS packaging preserves and protects, thus helping dramatically reduce food wastage. All our products and processes have outstanding environmental credentials.
EPS is usually recycled in one of three ways – (a) back into packaging after granulation and re-mixing or ‘re-gassed’ to make loose-fill EPS (b) recycled into CD/DVD cases, coat hangers or plant pots or (c) extruded and made into timber replacement products such as garden furniture. Alternatively, the latent energy within EPS can also be beneficially recovered for power or district heating.
